Hypertension
(High Blood Pressure)
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is one of the most common conditions we treat. Hypertension treatment at Finesse Primary Care combines accurate diagnosis, medication when it is needed, and the regular follow-up that keeps your numbers where they should be.
Blood pressure is high when the force of blood against your artery walls stays consistently elevated. Left uncontrolled, it strains the heart and blood vessels and raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and vision loss. Because it usually causes no symptoms, hypertension is often called the silent killer, which is why regular monitoring matters more than how you feel.
How we approach hypertension treatment
Most patients reach control with one or two medications and a few changes they can live with. We diagnose properly, treat to target, and recheck often enough to know the treatment is working rather than assuming it is.
Your plan may include reducing sodium, maintaining a healthy weight, regular activity, better sleep, stress management, and stopping tobacco. When medication is appropriate, we explain what it does and what to expect, then adjust based on your readings.
Monitoring between visits
Home monitoring tells us more than a single reading in the office. We will show you how to measure correctly and which numbers should prompt a call. The American Heart Association publishes the blood pressure categories we use, and the CDC explains the risk factors behind them.
Hypertension rarely travels alone
High blood pressure often appears alongside diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease, and the treatment for one can affect another. We manage them together rather than as separate problems. See our chronic disease management services, or our preventive and acute care page if you are due for a physical or screening.
Why the target changed to 130/80
For years patients were told that anything under 140/90 mmHg was acceptable. Current guidance is tighter: for most adults we treat to a target below 130/80 mmHg, because the evidence showed measurable reductions in stroke, heart failure and kidney decline at the lower target. If you were given a 140/90 goal some years ago and nothing has been revisited since, that is worth a conversation. We set out the reasoning, and what it means for medication choices, in our article on the updated guidelines for managing essential hypertension.
Protecting against stroke
High blood pressure is the single largest modifiable risk factor for stroke, and most of that risk is reversible with sustained control. Knowing the warning signs matters just as much as the numbers — our guide to stroke prevention and recovery covers what to watch for and why minutes count.
Related care
Blood pressure is rarely the only thing we are managing. Where it sits alongside diabetes, we treat the two together through our diabetes care, since the targets and medication choices interact. For older patients we weigh blood pressure control against fall risk and total medication burden as part of senior health care, and shortness of breath or swelling is assessed rather than assumed under respiratory health. Background reading on diet and activity is in our notes on daily health and wellness.
